Tally

Privacy Policy

Effective 2 September 2026  ·  Last updated 2 September 2026

This policy explains what Tally collects, why it collects it, who else sees it, and how you can have it corrected or deleted. It covers the Tally mobile app (dev.mtsstudio.tally) and the servers behind it.

The short version

You can use Tally without giving us your name
Counting events works without an account. An account is needed only for communities, shared events, announcements and emailed reports.
No advertising, no analytics, no tracking
Tally contains no advertising network, no analytics SDK and no third-party tracker. We do not build profiles of you and we do not track you across other apps or sites.
We never sell your data
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information, and we do not share it for anyone else's advertising.
The device identifier is random, not your hardware
Tally generates its own random identifier the first time it runs. It is not your device serial number, IMEI, MAC address or advertising ID, and it cannot be linked back to you by anyone else.
The camera only reads QR codes
Scanning is decoded on your device as the frames arrive. No photo or video is saved, uploaded or kept.
You can delete everything from inside the app
Profile → Delete Account removes your account, and you can ask us to delete it for you if you have already uninstalled Tally. See Your rights and choices.

1Who we are

Tally is published by MTS Studio, an independent developer, who is responsible for the personal data described in this policy. In this policy we, us and our mean MTS Studio.

For anything relating to your privacy, write to [email protected].

2What we collect

Information you give us

What When
Name and email address When you register an account, or update your profile.
Password When you register or change it. It is stored in protected form, not as readable text.
Email verification code Emailed to you at sign-up, and when you reset a forgotten password.
Community details The community name, description and member list you create or belong to.
Event content Event names, codes, dates, durations, group and item names, capacity limits, and the attendance counts you record.
Announcements The text you post to a community, and when you posted it.
Report requests The community and month range you ask a report for.
Correspondence What you write to us for support, and the address you write from.

Information collected automatically

What Why
App-generated device identifier
a random value created on first launch
Lets you create and edit your own events without an account, and lets a device be registered to a community.
Operating system and app version
e.g. "Android", "1.1.6"
Shown on the About screen, and used to diagnose problems and support older releases.
Connection records
IP address, timestamp, endpoint requested
Written by our servers as an ordinary part of answering a request. Used to keep the service running, apply rate limits, and investigate abuse.

3What we do not collect

To be specific about what is absent, Tally does not:

4Device permissions

Permission What it is used for
Internet To sync events, communities and announcements with our servers. Required.
Camera Only to scan an event or community QR code. Frames are decoded on your device and discarded immediately; nothing is stored or uploaded. Asked for the first time you open a scanner, and you can decline - you can type the event code by hand instead.
Vibrate Haptic feedback when you tap a counter, so you can count without looking. No data involved.
Keep the screen awake Stops the screen dimming while you are counting an event. No data involved.

5How we use it

We use the information above only to:

We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not make automated decisions about you that produce legal or similarly significant effects.

7Who else sees it

We share information only in these situations:

We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

8Information about other people

If you run a community

When you record attendance, you are recording information about other people. For that information, you decide what is collected and why - so you, not we, are the party responsible for it, and we act on your instructions in storing it. Make sure you have a lawful basis, tell the people concerned where the law requires it, and answer any request they make about their own information.

If you believe a community has recorded something about you through Tally, contact that community first - they control the record. If you cannot reach them, write to us at [email protected] and we will help where we reasonably can.

9Data kept on your device

Tally stores a small amount of data in its own private storage on your device:

This data stays on your device. You can remove all of it by clearing the app's data or uninstalling Tally - but read the note in the Terms first, because clearing the device identifier also ends your ability to edit events you created without an account.

10How long we keep it

Backups are cycled on a routine schedule, so deleted data may persist in a backup briefly before ageing out.

11Your rights and choices

In the app, right now

By writing to us

Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to ask for a copy of your information, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable form. To exercise any of these, email [email protected] from the address on your account.

We will respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity first, and we may decline a request where the law allows - for example where it would expose another person's information, or where a community's own records must be retained. If we decline, we will tell you why.

Exercising these rights costs nothing and will not cause us to treat you differently. If you are unhappy with our response, you may complain to the data protection authority where you live.

12How we protect it

The measures we take include:

No service can promise perfect security, and we do not. What we can promise is that if a breach affects your personal data and creates a real risk to you, we will notify you and the relevant authority as the law requires, and tell you what to do about it.

13Children

Tally is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, write to [email protected] and we will delete it.

Note that a community counting attendance may be counting children. Those counts are the community's records, and section 8 applies to them.

Our Child Safety Standards set out what we prohibit in relation to child sexual abuse and exploitation, how to report it, and who to contact.

14Where data is processed

Our servers and the services we rely on - including Google Firebase and our email provider - operate from data centres in more than one country, so your information may be stored or processed outside the country you live in. Wherever it is processed, this policy applies to it, and we require our providers to protect it to a comparable standard.

15Changes to this policy

We will update this policy when the app changes what it collects or how it uses data. The "Last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version. If a change is significant - new data collected, a new purpose, or a new category of recipient - we will give notice in the app or by email before it takes effect.
